Female body's before and after Weight LossCongratulations you did it!

You set a weight goal, you worked your butt off and you lost the weight. For most people the weight loss journey ends there. But, for those losing an excessive amount of weight the journey continues long after the pounds are shed.

As ideal as the idea of losing weight sounds, in many cases there may be some unwanted results. Here we will discuss two particular problems of excessive weight loss and options we offer to fix, or at least make manageable for you.

One of the major issues arising from excessive weight loss is excess/sagging skin.

Why does this happen? After your skin is stretched from weight gain for a long period of time it becomes hard to regain the skin’s elasticity once the weight is lost.

Is there a solution? Typically skin will need to be tightened or removed after excessive loss of weight. We sat down with one of our cosmetic consultants Debbie to get insight into the procedures available.

If patients are looking for surgical options, she suggests surgical lifts. They are available for the buttocks, arms and breasts. For the stomach patients may opt for a tummy tuck, a procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin in the abdomen area. For more information about these procedures visit our plastic surgery website.

Invasive surgery not at the top of your list? There are non-invasive and minimally invasive options available to patients to tighten the skin. ThermiTight is a minimally invasive treatment that uses radio frequency energy that is inserted under the patients skin via a small tube known as a cannula. Once inserted the tube heats under the skin to stimulate collagen production, which is a major component in keeping skin elasticity. Because the treatment is minimally invasive there is little downtime and patients typically return to their normal activities almost immediately.

Another problem that arises after excessive weight loss is stretch marks. There are two common reasons a person gets stretch marks either: gaining weight or losing it. The general areas of stretch mark formation are the thighs, arms, breasts, hips, and abdomen. Debbie suggests the following, “a patient can get either Fraxel laser treatments or microneedling; or a combination of the two depending on the complexity of the stretch mark scarring.” For information on either treatment options click the links above where you will be directed to our website.
