Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect the entire body. Roughly 1.5 million Americans suffer from lupus, and tens of thousands of new cases are diagnosed each year. There are several different forms of lupus, each one with its own unique symptoms.
Different Forms of Lupus
Systemic lupus is the most common form of lupus and may cause inflammation of the kidneys, brain or nervous system. Drug-induced lupus is similar to but less severe than systemic lupus. Cutaneous lupus, also known as discoid lupus, specifically affects the skin (especially areas exposed to sunlight) and is characterized by a red, scaly, rash that appears in circles.
Skin Problems from Lupus?
Studies have shown that discoid lupus causes more skin problems than other forms of lupus. In addition to the aforementioned rash, individuals with discoid lupus may also have scarring alopecia or cutaneous scarring. Since discoid lupus causes changes to the appearance of the skin, affected individuals should consult with a dermatologist.
