With summer in full swing, there are rampant reminders to apply sunscreen regularly when enjoying time in the sun. This time of year may pose concern to parents, whose are especially vulnerable to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Then why is the government advising against applying sunscreen to infants under the age of 6 months?
Thin Skin
Babies in general have thinner, softer features than those of adults; this applies to their skin as well. Also, keep in mind that sunscreens are typically comprised of chemicals. As a result, babies are at an increased risk of developing an allergic reaction or irritation from sunscreen. If sunscreen cannot be used, what should parents do?
Keep Them Out of the Sun
The safest place for babies is away from the sun, especially between the hours of 10AM and 2PM when the sun’s ultraviolet rays are strongest. When going outside, babies should be covered in a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and a hat that shields them from the sun. If you must apply sunscreen to your baby, use one that does not contain the insect repellent DEET. As always, regularly check your baby’s skin for abnormalities.
