It’s DVT Awareness Month and Island Vein Specialists is here to help you fight back – starting with the foods you eat! Super-foods come in all shapes and sizes and incorporating them into our diet can create huge benefit.
Here are 5 foods that can actually aid in DVT prevention. Eat ’em up!
Leafy Greens: Though foods high in vitamin K, such as kale, can actually hinder the effect of blood thinning medications when eaten sporadically, it can be beneficial to instead eat a small salad everyday.
Kiwi: Besides the well-known advantages of fruits and vegetables, kiwi eaters have less platelet activity which reduces your risk of blood clots.
Red Wine: Flavinoids in purple grapes can help prevent blood clots by making platelets. That means a glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away! But really only one glass. The benefits are reaped in moderation.
Garlic: As a blood thinner, garlic can regularly prevent against blood clots. You do want to check with your doctor, however, about how much garlic you should be eating if you already take a blood thinning medication.
Virgin Olive Oil: For a DVT friendly food choice, be sure to dip your bread in virgin olive oil! High in phenols, this food can also prevent blood clots.
