It is no longer a question that indoor tanning can greatly increase one’s risk of developing skin cancer in the future. Pop culture has glorified that tanned look for everyone, especially amongst teens for whom this can easliy become a habit. As a result, cities all over the nation are considering banning minors from indoor tanning. Chicago, however, has taken the lead, becoming the first U.S. city to outright ban individuals under the age of 18 from indoor tanning.
Disapproval of Tanning Quickly Approved
The bill got approved within a few short months, thanks to widespread awareness of the dangers associated with indoor tanning. Further helping its approval were testimonies from both dermatologists and skin cancer survivors. The city of Chicago has great hopes that this bill will reduce the future occurrence of melanoma and other forms of skin cancers.
Outdoor Tanning is no Safer Than Indoor Tanning
While on the subject of tanning, it is important to point out that outdoor tanning has the same skin cancer risks as indoor tanning. When out in the sun, you should always wear sunscreen, reapplying it frequently. If you must have that tanned look, consider a self-tanner.
